Orange County SC fell 3-2 to Oakland Roots SC on Wednesday, June 1st, at Laney Football Stadium. Goals from Erick “Cubo” Torres and Albi Skendi weren’t enough as Oakland Roots SC found the back of the net on three occasions. Juan Azócar scored once, while Óttar Magnús Karlsson scored a brace, including the late match-winner for Roots SC.

Roots SC took the lead from a corner in the 9th minute. Jesús Enríquez would curl a ball into OCSC’s box, where it deflected off multiple players before landing at Karlsson’s feet. Karlsson shot the ball towards the bottom left corner as it found the back of the net.

OCSC found themselves level in the 32nd minute after a penalty was awarded to them due to Tarek Morad’s handball in Roots SC’s box. Torres converted the penalty with a clean strike down the middle of the goal as Roots SC goalkeeper Benny Díaz guessed the wrong way, diving right. The first half would end 1-1, with Rakovsky having three saves in the first half.

The second half started, and Alex Villanueva saved OCSC from going down 2-1 in the 53rd minute when he cleared a Daniel Barber header on the goal line. In the 65th minute, OCSC took the lead following a corner from Seth Casiple that found Albi Skendi in the box. Skendi sent a header towards goal as it lodged into the near left corner past the diving Benny Díaz.

It looked like OCSC was going to go home with three points, but then Roots SC came knocking in the dying minutes of the match. In the 93rd minute of stoppage time, Juan Azócar drew Roots SC level with a beautiful finesse shot from the box that found the bottom right corner.

In the 94th minute, Hunter Gorksie fouled Karlsson near the OCSC box, which set up a free kick for Roots SC. In the 95th minute, Karlsson scored a screamer from the free-kick that found the right corner as it flew past Rakovsky.

The match ended with Roots SC taking all three points at home. Karlsson’s brace put him at ten goals on the season. Karlsson who is on loan from Italian club Venezia FC is also the sole leader of the USL Championship golden boot race for the time being.

Notes: This was the second and final time that OCSC played Roots SC this season, the first one ending in a 2-2 draw at Championship Soccer Stadium. It is the first time in club history that OCSC was defeated by Roots SC.

Erick “Cubo” Torres now has six goals in 12 appearances, tied with Milan Iloski for most goals for OCSC this season.

Iván Gutiérrez, who OCSC recently signed on May 31st, 2022, got to play his first minutes with the club when he was substituted on in the 83rd minute for Milan Iloski.

OCSC has a quick turnaround as they host New Mexico United on Saturday, June 4th, at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, with kickoff at 6:00 PM PT.
