Orange County SC got back to winning on Saturday, Aug. 21, with a 2-1 victory over San Diego Loyal SC at Torero Stadium.

It’s the first away win against Loyal SC in OCSC team history and a much-needed three points. In addition, interim head coach Richard Chaplow got his first win in his first game at the helm of OCSC.

The game started with Loyal SC looking more comfortable in play. In the 16th minute, Patrick Rakovsky was forced into a reflex save after Corey Hertzog let off a shot that went directly to the keeper, who got down in time to save it with his legs and keep the game scoreless.

The second half saw more of the same from Loyal SC, which pushed forward to find an opening. In the 56th minute, Tumi Moshobane converted from inside the box to make it 1-0 for the home side. Hertzog threaded a pass from the right side into the box for Moshobane, who took a touch to set up the shot and then let off a left-footed hit that found the right side netting.

In a must-win game on top of all that happened this week with the club, OCSC found itself down but not ou, and in the 64th minute OCSC found an equalizer from none other than Ronaldo Damus.

Kevin Alston threaded a ball forward from the left side of the field for Damus, who took a touch to get it past defender Sergio Chavez and then took a right-footed shot that found the bottom right corner.

Disaster would strike 2 minutes later for Sergio Chavez and Loyal SC when a centering pass from Sean “Ugo” Okoli got blocked by Joshua Yaro in the box but was picked up by Okoli after Chavez couldn’t control the ball to clear it from danger.

Okoli cut back towards the goal and passed it into the center of the box for Brian Iloski, who took a touch and then shot it. Chavez tried to jump in front of it but would instead just redirect into the goal for an own goal.

Loyal SC had a chance to equalize in the 77th minute after a corner kick from Alejandro Guido found Moshobane in the middle of the box, but Moshobane wa no’t clinical with his shot as it soared over the bar.

The win for Orand County SC was crucial, as they jumped two positions from 2nd place to fourth place in the USL Championship Pacific Division. OCSC (8-7-5, 29 pts) currently sits in second place, nine points behind division leaders Phoenix Rising FC (11-2-5, 38 pts), and two points ahead of Tacoma Defiance (7-4-6, 27 pts), who have three games in hand.

OCSC will be on the road again on Saturday, August 28 when it travels to South Carolina to take on Charleston Battery at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium to close out the month.
